mix bicarbonate of soda with vinegar, the gas produced is carbon dioxide, and what you're left with in the solution is sodium acetate.

This is basically what is in a reuseable heating pad. The one i had had the liquid sealed up in plastic and had a metal disk that you clicked to get the friction to start the reaction. Then once it was used you ust poped it back in a pan of boiling water untill the slush melts back to the clear water. let it cool and its ready to use again whenever you click the metal disk.
