I wouldn't ever fish in australia, who knows that oneday, the biggest croccodile go up to the shore instead of the biggest fish...

Specialised baits called Boilies are the most common. Basically paste that can be made using various ingredients and flavours then rolled into little balls and boiled for a minute or two to give them a hard skin that stops them being eaten by small fish. Sweetcorn is common here aswell, the old British record was caught on corn. Luncheon meat, worms, maggots, prawns and bread all work well also!
