He is known for taking Western/European songs and by improvising a bit here and there, making it his own. For example, his song 'Zooby Zooby' from Mithun Chakraborty's "Dance Dance" film is a bite-off of Modern Talking's 'Brother Louie'; and that's just one example. There are certainly more where that came from.
The legal disputes between Aftermath and the Hindi Film Industry was one of the reasons for Truth Hurts' departure from the company:)

Now, I have been watching Hindi films for 14 years (ever since I was a five-year-old girl) and I know all the ins and outs of the industry/actors/actresses and the thought of Bappi - out of all the other composers - suing others for copying his work is beyond my horizon. The man is known for taking others' work and "putting his twist on it." Had it been some other composer, I wouldn't have the problem of going along with their decisions; however, Bappi? Nah!

Before releasing the material, Dre and Quik decided to call the original composer/producer of the track for permission with hopes that legal issues wouldn't arise in the future. After not having any luck with finding the contact information, they decided to release the video. Months after the video was released, they received a call from the Indian Film Industry representatives, in addition to the original composer of the song, Bappi Lahiri. As a result, Aftermath was sued with $500 mill.

Ra was hesitant at first (with the title (Addictive) and the track, overall), due to his religious beliefs, but shortly, agreed to complete it.

Ra was one of the artists signed with Aftermath, as well. Dre and Ra had plans so that the former would produce the latter's album. Months had passed and Dre was overly busy with the production of other acts, as a result, Rakim's work was put aside. Since Dre knew he had to do something to, at least, pay back for the legend (not that he was asking for anything), he told him to write a verse and be part of the song.

Since Truth Hurts was one of the new artists at Aftermath (at that time), and she was impatiently waiting for him to make time for her to produce her album (since Dre is famous for signing multiple artists when he knows, for a fact, that he only has the time to work with at most 25% of them), he decided that the song should be incorporated in Truth's joint.

I recently read Dre's biography and this is how the song was introduced to him and his team: DJ Quik was at home, brushing his teeth one morning with his TV on a Hindi-speaking channel when the original video/song was playing. The tune caught his ear and he liked it, so he automatically went and taped the entire thing. Thereafter, he took it to Dre who was astonished by the foreign sound. |
