what's with all the bagging on this guy for supposedly being out of tune? jesus man he's improvising his ass off over a jazz tune that is in several different keys! this isn't a blues or some three chord folk tune. cut the guy some slack. he's probably having to bend all kinds of stuff to get the notes he needs that are not on that harmonica, since he's not playing a chromatic harmonica.

I just listen to this again, it sounds like the biggest issue is the harmonica and how it's set up. To my ears, Pat is struggling to play it. He would be a good candidate for a Filisko style harmonica. I bet then his playing would be smoother and intonation more precise.
This is very good playing.

Carlos is fantastic but no the improviser that Pat is. Pat is a very good musician.

Pat is obviously a very good musician and excellent harmonica player but his intonation is all over the place. Mine isn't much better BUT if it doesn't sound good... it's a little like listening to an out of tune guitar.

Amazing what you can do with that little thing!

I'm not trying to put you down or anyone else, but unlike other 'harp players', Pat is a great example of how being a good musician overcomes the limitations of the instrument.

Howard has a great ear in additions to his mighty skills on the harp. IMO, you've gotta have a great ear if you're going to play this style well.

Agreed.
There is no comparison when it comes to diatonic techniques, Howard is the MAN. But even he often hits a note off pitch then has to adjust. That's what I don't like about it.
chrismichalek (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
it's all in HOW and what you play. There are players out that truly they can play anything on the diatonic and to me it sound a bit ridiculous. I don't know this Pat Bergeson but he's intonation is all over the place and not a great example of this style of playing. However, he's clearly a very stellar player and good musician but needs to focus on tone and intonation. |
