It's not weird. It is the French national anthem. The 1812 Overture was written in celebration of the Russian victory over Napoleon. Early in the war, the French were marching on Moscow,,and the French anthem depicts the tide being in their favor. Later, after Napoleon is repelled, the Russian national hymn becomes a dominant theme.
