He's got a very innovative sound, and geez! he's fast. I'm primarily smooth jazz, so this kind of playing is a fun little treat to listen to. I like the interview they did with him in this video as well.

you wouldn't find too many classical unless its transposed or adapted, cuz the sax was invented like in the late 1800's, like after the classical period. so u really wouldn't find any unless they're by modern composers trying to do classic.

I think you need to know a lot more theory than that. You're really over-simplifying jazz as a whole. Sure, that's how jazz came to be - just people playing around on instruments they were pretty unfamiliar with over fairly diatonic chord progressions, but now it has evolved into such a challenging music that you have to know your horn up and down. Knowing all your scales will only get you so far. If you don't practice rhythms, chords, reading, memorizing, etc... it won't show in your playing.

The only thing that I disagree with Liebman about is that it is not all technical. Yes one does need to know thier scales, but if you have a good feel of your instrument, a person will stretch and cover scales through their subconscious, that they may not know the name of. The key is to know what notes to hit, and what notes not to hit. You do need to know your scales as far as knowing you flats and sharps, becuase you do not want to play out of key. But once you know that, one's mind takes over

I hear alot of people say that they do not like Dave Liebman style of playing. But what we must remeber, is that Dave is a product of the Miles Davis eror , when Miles challenged everyone and everything that had to do with music or sound in general. Dave has continued on in this tradition, and he stretches what some may define as reality.
