of course he was messed up before the song was made but he twisted the lyrics in the song to tell his followers that the song told him that those people have to be killed and im sure he was well aware of his manipulation and that the song was not at all meant that but used it to manipulate his victims.

helter skelter wasn't the reason manson killed all those people (or rather ordered them to be killed). manson was just plain messed up, in jail for half his life even before the manson family was started. even if he had never heard helter skelter he would have done the things he did. people often make the connection between the song and the killings, but the song is not the reason for the manson murders. either way, why is this being discussed here anyways? i say we should just enjoy the music.
