What I would give to have lived then to see the Goodman Band. Teddy Wilson was awesome, as was Krupa and Hampton. I did see Krupa at the Metropole in NYC years later and he was still good.

I'm currently playing of all things, BLUEGRASS! But I grew up listening to this style of music and to this day I love it! Krupa's drumming is of course legendary, and notice the position of his snare drum. The angle is an extension of his arms. I wonder why drummers don't do this today? Thanks for posting this, it's the stuff of legends.

You can always tell Krupa is around from the sound of his heavy foot on the bass drum The man was a giant among legends. The big highlight of the evening was when the band went up to Harlem after the concert and battled it out with Chick Webbs band. There is still some argument on who won that match. With these musicians though who cares who won. The magic would have been being there to hear the masters work. Chick Webb was Krupas idol and he always managed to intimidate him.

I feel like I know every note of this concert: including the Lionel Hampton sotto voce comments.

I wanted, in the Eighties to treat my Dad to an evening with Teddy Wilson, I think at the Rainbow Room. Now they are both dead. The musical memories linger...

Incredible musicians! How I envy those who heard the 1938 Live at Carnegie Hall concert. As much of a treat as it would have been, though, I would have found it difficult to sit still in my seat, as I love dancing to Benny Goodman and his orchestra.

I am a rock fan but still, thanks to my late father, I can't help but be a fan of the big band era and especially the king of swing. The carnegie hall performance is simply brilliant...
